Below-Grade Grinding · Clean Replant Surface
Stump Grinding in Clearwater & Pinellas County, FL
$100–$500 most jobs. Ground 6–12 inches below grade so you can sod, hardscape, or replant where the tree used to be. Free quotes, same-day in most cases.
A clean finish to a tree that's already gone
A stump left in your yard is a tripping hazard, a mower-killer, a magnet for termites and carpenter ants, and a permanent reminder of the tree you paid to remove. Stump grinding solves all of that for $100 to $500 on most residential jobs. Tree Impressions of Florida Environmental Services LLC grinds stumps across all of Pinellas County — usually within a week of when you call, often the same day if we're already routed through your area.
The job is faster and cheaper than people expect. A 24-inch stump takes about 30 minutes of grinding and costs around $120. The result is a clean below-grade hole where the trunk used to be, ready for sod, hardscape, or a new tree.
Last Updated: May 2026Why grinding beats stump removal
People sometimes ask for "stump removal" assuming it means digging the whole root ball out. We don't recommend that for residential lots — pulling a root ball leaves a crater 4–8 feet across that you have to fill, packs in clay subsoil, and usually damages turf out 10 feet in every direction.
Grinding is targeted: a hydraulic disc with carbide teeth chips the stump and major surface roots into wood chips, working down to 6–12 inches below grade. The hole is small (about the diameter of the original trunk) and can be back-filled with the chips themselves or topsoil. Sod or new growth covers the spot in weeks.
For most residential stumps in Clearwater, grinding is faster, cheaper, and far less disruptive than full root removal.
Pricing & Common Questions
How much does stump grinding cost in Clearwater?
The rule of thumb is $2–$5 per inch of stump diameter measured at ground level, with a $100 minimum trip charge. So a 16-inch stump costs $100–$120; a 30-inch stump runs $150–$200; a massive 48-inch oak stump can run $300–$500. Multi-stump pricing on a single visit lowers the per-stump cost noticeably.
How deep do you grind?
Standard grinding depth is 6–12 inches below ground level — enough for grass, sod, or hardscape. If you plan to replant a tree where the stump was, ask for deeper grinding (12–18 inches) so the new root ball has clean soil to settle into. Going deeper is a small upcharge.
What about the wood chips left behind?
Two options. Default is to leave the chips piled in and around the hole — they decompose into useful organic matter over 12–18 months and fertilize whatever grows back. If you want immediate sod or to plant right away, ask for haul-away (about $50–$100 added depending on volume) and we'll take everything with us.

Stump grinding questions we hear most
Will the stump grow back after grinding?
Most species don't regrow once ground. A few — laurel oak, Brazilian pepper, certain palms — can send up suckers from surface roots even after grinding. If you're worried about regrowth on a sucker-prone species, we can apply a stump treatment or grind a wider area around the trunk to remove more of the root flare.
Can I plant a new tree where the old stump was?
Yes, but plan ahead. Ask for deeper grinding (12–18 inches) and either haul the chips away or remove them from the hole before backfilling with topsoil. New roots don't grow well into a chip-heavy hole because chips deplete soil nitrogen as they decompose. Better still: shift the new tree 4–6 feet from the old stump location and plant in undisturbed soil.
Do you need utility marking before grinding?
For surface stumps under 12 inches deep, usually not. For deeper grinding or stumps in known utility corridors (irrigation manifolds, sprinkler lines, gas, fiber), we'll request a Sunshine 811 locate before the job — no charge to you, takes 2 business days.
